The region is famed for its outdoors focused activities. If you want to get closer to nature, catch Musky, fish through ice or just sit back and unwind, there’s no better base for your explorations than Big Boulder Lodge.
Big Boulder Lodge is in the middle of legendary Musky country and with ice fishing common on the lake, it is popular all year round with groups of fishermen indulging in their favorite sport, and guilt-free fishermen whose families are more than catered for in Big Boulder Lodge.
Big Boulder lodge is situated where the Manitowish river meets the lake and has two piers from which canoes and other water craft can be launched. Camp Manitowish is situated only a few hundred yards away around the lake shore and the lake is perfectly safe for most common lake activities. Wild rice can be abundant in this area at certain times of year and a foraging expedition in canoes or kayaks is as the native people have done for centuries.
Nature and Birdwatching
Big Boulder lodge is ideally located for those with a keen interest in the local birds and wildlife.
With the area located in National Forest, the richness and vibrancy of our natural resources are on full display year round. Birdwatchers will become acquainted with our local species the loon.
Since the 195os Big Boulder Lodge has been popular for those with an interest in winter sports. Herb Field called it a ‘Winter Paradise Destination’ – Back then it was skiing and ice skating, as it is today… however I am sure that skidoos would come as something of a surprise…
We can highlight some of the more popular activities but we recommend that you visit the Boulder Junction Tourism Office Activities page to get a more complete picture of what the area really does very, very well
